Grazing Canola Tour May 17
Everyone is invited to a tour of canola that was grazed last fall and is flourishing this spring at the Bryan Jones Farm one mile east of Dusty. The tour will be near the site of the former Dusty schoolhouse. The tour will be at 4:00 PM on Thursday, May 17 just off Highway 26 one mile east of Dusty.
Forty six head of cows, calves, and yearlings grazed Jones’ canola in October last fall for 3 weeks. The canola is now in bloom and 4 feet tall and will be ready to harvest in July this year for a crop of seed to sell. The animals gained 2.4 pounds per day.
This is not Jones’ first canola crop, having produced spring canola in recent years. He plans to repeat the grazing in another field next year.
The project is funded by the Washington Canola Cropping Systems and in collaboration with animal nutritionists Don Lewellyn and Steve Fransen of the WSU Prosser Research Center.
Contact Steve Van Vleet or Bryan Jones or Dennis Roe for details at 509 397 6290.
